Male sex symbols were
created in much the same way as female. Though the new masculine
film hero seldom appeared naked on posters, male actors can also
be referred to as pin-ups in that they were “posing”
for the viewer. This was the case with singer and actor Elvis
Presley (1935-1977), and actor James Dean (1931-1955). Like the
female pin-ups, they tried to live up to the public's image of
them and, like some of their female colleagues, their lives ended
abruptly.
