The Gibson girls

The pin-up girl concept can be traced back to the 1880s to the so-called Gibson Girl, illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. Gibson Girls were tall, thin, erotic but self-aware women that also represented an American feminine ideal.

There was a great difference between the Gibson Girl’s chaste Victorian look and the female models popular at the time of World War I.

The Gibson Girls were popular at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA, but became outmoded in public taste due to their naiveté and romanticism by the beginning of World War I. .
