History of erotica: Pornography, erotic ads, pinups and ancient erotic art

When pornography laws were relaxed the advertising industry quickly began to exploit the new possibilities. The ad below for Faberge Great Skin Day Care Moisturizer in a 1976 issue of Cosmopolitan was right on target with its reference to hippies, bare breasts and free love.

Swedish model and former Miss Sweden Gunilla Knutson played a decisive role in 1966 when she appeared in a commercial for shaving foam on television. To the strains of David Rose’s pop hit ”The Stripper”, she encouraged men to ”take it all off” in a way that confused the boundaries between clothing and shaving foam for the listener. The commercial achieved a great deal of attention but heralded a new era for sex in advertising.
